Licensing in MichiganLicensing is done through the State of Michigan, Department of Consumer and Industry Services. Candidates for a license in cosmetology must have completed 1500 hours of cosmetology education in a licensed cosmetology school, pass both a written and practical examination administered by the state's testing administrator, and pass a background check. Candidates for a license in manicuring/nail tech must have completed 400 hours of manicuring education in a licensed cosmetology school, pass both a written and practical examination administered by the state's testing administrator, and pass a background check. (Students who contract and attend at the Battle Creek campus are required to complete 600 hours prior to applying for a license.) Candidates for an instructor license must have a current, valid, Michigan cosmetologist or manicurist license, a high school diploma or GED, and complete the required number of hours of training in a licensed cosmetology school. Manicuring Instructors must have 300 hours of instructor training; cosmetology instructors must have 500 hours of training. (Instructor Trainees who contract and attend at the Portage campus must complete 600 hours prior to applying for a license.) Both must pass state administered exams. All graduates of Wright Beauty Academy must complete a written and practical examination with a score of 80% or higher, complete all hours required by the state for the course, turn in all projects as required by the Academy, and have no outstanding accounts. Once these criteria have been met certification of graduation and completion will be granted. |
